Until
XV and XVI centuries, coffee was unknown. During those
centuries extensive plantations were harvested in the Arab
region of Yemen.
The consumption of this drink increased a lot in Europe in
the XVII Century. The Dutch were urged to cultivate it, and
they were given the task of exploiting big plantations in
Java and Sumatra, followed by the French to whom are awarded
the title of having taken the coffee for the first time to
Latin America. Since 1714 the French were able to bring a
plant of coffee in good state to the island of Martinique,
expanding through the new Continent. |
